The amendment, which will enter into force on January 1, 2022, is a step forward in terms of access to education for deaf and hard of hearing students and by providing sign language interpreting services available in the field of employment. A new element of the law amendment is that an interpreter can be involved in kindergartens, integrated education, or also for deaf-blind students.
150 hours per year in preschool education, 300 hours per academic year in elementary schools, high schools, vocational training institutions; 150 per semester in full-time higher education and correspondence courses, or 100 hours of special interpretation hours are provided.
The amendment favorably affects deaf and hard of hearing persons participating in adult training, as they can request a sign language interpreter for 40% of their training. It provides 30 hours of free sign language interpreting services per year for people who use special communication systems and the deaf-blind.
An important change is that hearing-impaired persons working as employees and entrepreneurs are entitled to 50 hours of free sign language interpreting services per year.
