"Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner!" - the Jesus prayer is only so short, but how great its power is also proven by the fact that Pope Francis recently asked the faithful: no matter how busy they are, to repeat it as many times as possible during the day.
Neurosurgeon András Csókay told
Vasárnap.hu this prayer helped him get back on his feet after the death of his little son, and that the success of the surgery on the Siamese twins was also due to this. Details from the interview:
"I learned this prayer in connection with the death of my little son. It was a huge help in getting back on my feet. Marci drowned in the 20-centimeter pool water due to an epileptic seizure. This is a terrible tragedy for a family. Despite this, I didn't lose my faith, but my life simply stopped. That's when I really learned this prayer and this kind of contemplation, at the age of 58 - recalled the brain surgeon. As he said, it was through prayer that he had such deep experiences of God, which moved his life forward.
– Not only was I able to get up from grief, but I was able to meet even greater professional challenges. I owe the success of the conjoined twins surgery to the death of my baby boy, as it is because of him that I learned this prayer. While I was praying this, I got the five basic neurosurgery ideas that we used to separate the children.
"As long as a person lives, he breathes." And he prays. We can really adjust this to breathing. When we inhale we say "Lord Jesus", when we exhale we say "have mercy on me". This is the basis of the Jesus prayer. And its essence is that we can reach such a spiritual depth through it that we are not surprised if we get an experience of God! András Csókay pointed out. He added that there is no 100% guarantee, but if we have such an experience twice or even just once in our life, we will live with a smile for the rest of our lives, no matter how much pain and suffering befalls us.
András Csókay also mentioned that Father Ferenc Jálics, the former spiritual leader of Pope Francis, will be buried on Saturday, June 12. As he said, he was the modern-day developer of contemplative spiritual exercises. Contemplative spiritual practice is based on the Jesus prayer, or – as Pope Francis said – the spirituality of the Russian pilgrim. According to András Csókay, Pope Ferenc may have remembered Father Ferenc Jálics with his thoughts in connection with his upcoming funeral.
