Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó asked the Bavarian Minister of the Interior for information on the punishment received by the person who ran onto the pitch waving a rainbow flag during the German-Hungarian European Championship match during the Hungarian national anthem.

In his letter addressed to Joachim Herrmann, the head of Hungarian diplomacy wrote: the Hungarian national team was subjected to an unprecedented insult during the European football championship match in Munich on June 23. Here is the full text of the letter:

Dear Minister!
The Hungarian national team was subjected to an unprecedented insult during the match of the European Football Championship on June 23, 2021 in Munich. During the singing of our country's national anthem, a person waving a rainbow-colored flag ran onto the field and provoked the Hungarian players who were singing the national anthem.

Of course, it sometimes happens that fans run onto the pitch during or after the match, but it is still outrageous that this happens during the national anthem of one of the participating countries.

Just as it is difficult to find an explanation for the fact that, despite the artificial political tension before the match, the directors were visibly unprepared for this incident. And this is a benign opinion about everything that happened.

Based on all of this, I respectfully ask the Minister to inform me about the punishment received by the person who ran onto the pitch during the Hungarian national anthem and waving the rainbow flag, as well as whether they investigated what organizational deficiencies could have led to the incident, taking into account that there was certainly a sufficient number of police forces present in the stadium, as we saw the formation of the commando line in front of the Hungarian fans.

I wish the Minister good health and success in his work!
Budapest, June 30, 2021.
Sincerely,
Péter Szijjártó
