According to the government decree published today, a referendum can be held again. The mayor Gergely Karácsony immediately pounced on the opportunity, announcing on his Facebook page that he was initiating a national referendum on three topics:

  • the Student City should be built in Budapest instead of the Chinese Fudan University
  • the government should not sell the highways
  • there should be universal, free antibody screening for everyone over 60.

In the case of Fudan, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced in a Government Info in early June that there could be a referendum on the project, and that the government would accept the result. On the same day, however, representatives of the ruling party submitted to the parliament amendments to the law, with which they concreted the investment, so to speak, and legally encircled the project dreamed up in cooperation with China.
