The Fidesz mayor of Lipótváros figured out how to make public parking easier, the Capital City made it impossible, and then started implementing the idea, only in another district.

In November 2020, Péter Szentgyörgyvölgyi, mayor of Lipótváros, submitted a proposal to Gergely Karácsony to put it on the agenda of the capital assembly: the mayor's idea was that by amending the parking ordinance, all Budapest mayors could designate exclusive waiting places for the residents of the districts they lead.

In his response, Gergely Karácsony stated that the legislative environment does not allow the capital city government to implement any additional regulations beyond those specified in the capital parking ordinance, therefore Szentgyörgyvölgyi's proposal will not be put on the agenda.

What is allowed to Teréz is not allowed to Lipót

Almost a year after the submission, on August 11 – also at Szentgyörgyvölgyi's initiative – Samu Balogh, the mayor's chief of staff, and Tamás Strang, the BKK's integrated service and infrastructure development manager, sat down at a table with the V. district mayor. At the consultation

the administration of the capital wanted to bind the possibility of establishing exclusive waiting areas for residents to conditions which it has no legal basis to stipulate,

since neither the decree nor the legislation contains regulations on this.

It also turned out that the fulfillment of the specified conditions is possible only at the expense of residential parking spaces, and the facilities whose creation was set as a condition do not have any conceptual or criteria definition.

Elsewhere, however, the capital managed to "solve" it

In his statement on Monday, the representative explained that the traffic engineering plan for District V was submitted to Budapest Közút on January 25, but it did not respond even after the 20-day deadline according to the regulations. On July 23rd, Péter Szentgyörgyvölgyi sent a letter asking for a reply by registered mail, to which a shocking reply was received on the 26th: in the meantime, it was possible to find or create the appropriate legal environment, however

based on the guidelines of the Budapest municipality, the request of the originator of the V. district was rejected, while the VI. district's request was approved.

Péter Szentgyörgyvölgyi does not give up

The mayor of Lipótváros explained that he will continue the work he has started, so that the measure is carried out by maintaining the balance of traffic operators. Due to the discriminatory decision of the capital, Szentgyörgyvölgyi turned to Karácsony to determine the conditions under which he is willing to support the residents of the city center in the establishment of exclusive waiting areas for residents, indicating the specific legal reference.
