The State Secretary responsible for social affairs of the Ministry of Human Resources praised the role of churches in child protection to MTI on Thursday.

Three-quarters of the children in the child protection system are cared for by church-run institutions or service providers, Attila Fülöp said after a Greek Catholic child protection conference in Nyíregyháza.

16,000 of the 23,000 children are taken care of by the churches, of which about 2,500 are taken care of by the Greek Catholics, he added.

Child protection should not be interpreted as a state monopoly, there is a great need for church experience. In their case, this is not a task based on legislation or obligations, but a natural task and mission, said the state secretary.

These children need to experience the experience of belonging to the community, to build relationships and trust in their lives. The partnership of the churches is important in this, said Attila Fülöp.

Children must be saved not only for life, but also for the sake of the nation, he said.
