"The Austrian chancellor is tough as nails: Austria will not accept any Afghans!" – this is the headline on the front page of Bild, Germany's most read daily newspaper. Sebastian Kurz earned the cynical German criticism by declaring that he will do everything to prevent a repeat of the 2015 migrant invasion in his country.

Bild almost hysterically announces on its front page that Kurz does not want to allow any Afghan refugees into his country. In the interview with him, Kurz replied that Austria still has "many opportunities (...) to prevent the events of 2015 from happening again".

Kurz also talked about how a lot has changed now: the EU has improved border protection, and the Greek government is fighting illegal migration with great force. “There are many things that cannot be compared to 2015, thank God! And in the case of many European countries, the incoming signals are also very different," said Kurz. However, due to the critical situation in Afghanistan, "the alarm must be raised," he added.

Kurz emphasized that Austria is ready to provide local assistance to people in Afghanistan, "but we are not willing to accept Afghans voluntarily."

Austria already has one of the largest Afghan communities, whose social integration is a huge challenge. That's why we won't take in more people."

Although the law prohibits the return of people deported from the EU to Afghanistan in the current situation on human rights grounds, Kurz explained: "many of those who have applied for asylum are not even Afghans, for example those who came from Iran." He added that "we will naturally deport" these refugees
