János Áder urged joint EU action on migration, the climate crisis and the management of public debt at the meeting of the Arraiolos group in Rome on Wednesday.

At the press conference following the 16th meeting of the Arraiolos Group, Hungarian President János Áder said:

there is space, place and reason for international cooperation in the matter of migration to be established.

As he said, the Union must step up action against human traffickers and terrorists, as well as increase the resources to be used for the reconstruction of humanitarian zones.

In connection with the management of the public debt, he said that several countries were already struggling with problems in this area even before the coronavirus epidemic, but Covid only deepened the crisis, which, according to him, requires urgent joint action. In the absence of this, he added, it will be very difficult to reach and implement common EU goals and projects.

Regarding the climate situation, he stated that today the world is further from achieving the Paris climate goals than it was six years ago, when these goals were formulated in Paris. He drew attention to the fact that Hungary was the first in the EU to legally commit to becoming climate neutral by 2050, and in fact, "following the government's measures, 90 percent of Hungarian electricity production will be carbon dioxide-free by 2030."

At the press conference, the Hungarian head of state said that during the meeting, which also discussed the strategic autonomy of the Union, he also brought to the attention of those present the words of Robert Schuman, one of the founders of the European Union, according to which

the essence of integration is not to destroy successful national aspirations, but rather to embrace them.

According to János Áder, if we are talking about the future of the European Union, it must be clarified whether we "take to heart the admonitions of the founders", whether we comply with the basic treaty, or whether we allow room for stealthy legislation, whether we resist double standards and the bureaucratization of the EU.
