From today, EU citizens who do not live in Great Britain will not be able to use their identity card for entry at British border stations. At the same time, EU citizens legally settled in Great Britain can still enter the country with an identity card for at least four more years.
The British Ministry of the Interior states in its information: identity cards are among the identity documents with which, according to the experience of the British border police authority, the most misuse is committed.
According to the ministry, almost half of the fake identity documents discovered at British border checkpoints last year were made in the countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area, and in Switzerland.
The rule change, which will end the use of identity cards for entry into Great Britain from Friday, applies equally to citizens of this group of countries.
According to the position of the British Home Office, identity cards can easily be misused by those who want to enter Great Britain illegally.
By not accepting these identity documents from 1 October, the British border authorities will enable the British government to prevent organized crime groups and illegal immigrants from entering illegally using these documents, the Home Office in London said in a statement. .
At the same time, the ministry confirms that EU citizens who have settled legally in Great Britain will be able to use their identity card to enter the country until at least 2025, as the British government is committed to protecting the acquired rights of EU citizens living in Great Britain.
Great Britain left the European Union on January 31 last year, but those EU citizens who have settled in the country legally and according to their way of life until the end of 2020, until the end of the 11-month transition period that began after the termination of British EU membership (Brexit), can still stay while retaining all their acquired rights. However, for this they have to apply for an indefinite residence permit - a settled status with an official legal name.
