Five female researchers, including Katalin Karikó, who played a pioneering role in the development of an mRNA-based vaccine against Covid-19, were awarded this year the international scientific prize created for women by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and L'Oréal, the Paris-based company announced on Thursday organization.

According to the justification, the Hungarian biochemist earned the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women and Science award, which comes with a cash prize of 100,000 euros, as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, as a candidate for the North American continent, for his exceptional role in perfecting mRNA-based technology, which made it possible the decisive step in the creation of vaccines against the coronavirus.
