The Catholic church in Felsőszentmárton, Baranya county, which also plays a decisive role in the religious life of the local Croats, has been renovated.
Miklós Soltész, the State Secretary of the Prime Minister's Office responsible for church and ethnic relations, told reporters after the Saturday farewell mass in the Croatian language in the church, which was renovated with government support, that the external and internal renovation of the building was carried out with a government grant of about forty million forints.
Christianity has always been important in the lives of the nationalities in Hungary, as the census also showed that a much higher proportion of them than the entire population claimed to belong to one of the religions, the state secretary noted.
Almost all representatives of the Croats living in Hungary are considered Catholics, and the Hungarian government tries to help and support their efforts related to cultural, educational and religious developments, he added.
He said: the interior of the Catholic church dedicated to St. Martin, built in 1852, located along the Dráva River, in the southwestern part of Baranya, in Ormánság, has been renovated in this way, and the plastering and coloring follows.
In May of this year, Miklós Soltész announced in Pécs that 35 churches in 28 settlements in Baranya County will be renovated within the framework of the church renovation program worth HUF 510 million.
