Workers in the social and child protection fields will receive a 20 percent wage increase starting in January, the State Secretary for Social Affairs of the Ministry of Human Resources said on Monday in Pécs.

On the occasion of Social Work Day, Attila Fülöp announced at an event organized by the Hungarian Association of Social Directors and Professionals (SZIME) and the Baranya County Branch of the General Directorate of Social and Child Protection (SZGYF) that all workers in the social and child protection field will receive a wage increase, regardless of whether they are state, an employee of a municipal, civil or church-run institution.

In connection with the measure affecting approximately one hundred thousand people, the state secretary drew attention to the fact that "everyone will receive the amount of the basic salary and sectoral allowance they received in a value increased by twenty percent".

He reported that the infrastructural developments are also continuing: the infrastructure development of basic social services is currently taking place at 368 points in the country with a budget of HUF 27 billion.

According to his announcement, in the case of people with disabilities, the aim is to create smaller homes and subsidized housing instead of larger institutions. He added: by the end of 2022, the care of about two thousand people could be improved in this way at 206 locations in the country thanks to the 25 billion renovation of the affected buildings.

The State Secretary reminded that four years ago, the National Assembly declared November 12 the day of social work. In connection with the holiday, he drew attention to the fact that "what the workers in the field do every day is not about expressing regret, but hard mental and physical work."

As he said, everyone in the field is trying to change and improve life situations. "You can hardly imagine a more difficult mission," he said.

He believed that the steadfastness of the social worker will always be needed, since "helping the many cared for builds and strengthens communities".

In connection with the coronavirus epidemic, he highlighted: social workers played and continue to play an important role in creating community security.

László Őri (Fidesz-KDNP), the president of the Baranya County Municipality, highlighted that Pécs has held a similar event every year for two decades to thank the workers in the area for their socially extremely important work.

He emphasized: during the defense against the epidemic, both the workers in the social field and the volunteers helping people were a huge help to the needy in Baranya County.

At the event, awards were presented to those working in the field.
