The jihadists of the Islamic State terrorist organization are already present in almost all of Afghanistan's 34 provinces - Deborah Lyons, the UN special representative for Afghanistan, assessed the situation in the South Asian country after the radical Islamist Taliban seized power in mid-August.

The Taliban are mainly trying to curb the Islamic State group active in Afghanistan and known as the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) by illegally detaining and killing suspected terrorists. As he said, the international community should pay more attention to these events...

...The diplomat said that while the jihadists committed 60 assassinations last year, this year they have already committed 334 acts of terrorism. Lyons also repeatedly warned of a humanitarian disaster as winter sets in, given the collapsed economy and drought. He urged the international community to find a solution to pay the salaries of health workers, teachers and aid workers. Having said that, humanitarian aid alone is not sufficient. He added that the economic collapse will promote illegal drug, arms and human trafficking , as well as unregulated financial transfers, "from which only terrorists benefit". He said that these diseases will first infect Afghanistan and then the entire region.

In its report presented in Vienna on Tuesday, the UN Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (UNODC) already drew attention to the fact that opium production has increased in Afghanistan, and that "the uncertainty since August 2021 has driven up" the price of heroin's raw material.
