MEP Kinga Gál, the recently elected vice-president of Fidesz, considers their withdrawal from the European People's Party to be a timely decision that contributes to the strengthening of the European right and gives enormous freedom. In an interview with Index, the politician revealed that Manfred Weber, who also negotiated with Péter Márki-Zay, was a disappointment to him as a person.

In an interview with Index, the vice president of Fidesz said that, in his view, it is not over yet, but a serious leftward shift process in the European People's Party has already begun before the 2019 European Parliament elections. Kinga Gál revealed that their former People's Party colleagues in the European Parliament often ask if they will vote with them, to which the Fidesz representatives respond:

"we vote in the same way as the People's Party would have done two years ago, five years ago or ten years ago."

It is easy to follow how much the attitude of the party family has changed on several issues. As an example, he mentioned that a few years ago the People's Party would certainly not have signed a joint five-party letter like the one it published on Tuesday regarding the suspension of the recovery fund in Poland.

Our withdrawal from the European People's Party was a timely and good step. It gave us enormous freedom to contribute to the strengthening and renaissance of the European right"

- emphasized Kinga Gál.

According to him, the "attacks in the back" and "teaching lessons" contributed significantly to the breakup, while the European People's Party was "flirting" with those who were interested in breaking up the party family. Among the "very ugly attacks", he singled out the discussion and voting of the Sargentini report before the 2019 European Parliament elections.

"The People's Party cannot be more left-wing than the left, more liberal than the liberals"

the politician stated.

The representative of the European Parliament of Fidesz recalled that many of their colleagues from the People's Party stood by them during the attacks, but they did not represent the main line. Manfred Weber, who had a good relationship with Fidesz and Viktor Orbán for a long time, said of his change of heart: the faction leader believed that he could be the head of the European Commission, he believed that the right behavior for him was to shake off everything that pulls him to the right. According to Gál Kinga, this was a big mistake, because while he weakened the People's Party faction and offended many, Weber did not even achieve his goal. He revealed

Weber was also a great disappointment to him as a human being.

The vice president of Fidesz continued by saying that it is difficult to find meaning in why Manfred Weber had to meet with Péter Márky-Zay, a left-wing politician who is not even officially the leader of the list. At the same time, Gál Kinga is not afraid that the opposition will gain positions in the European People's Party, since, as he pointed out, this is not in the interest of several member parties of the People's Party. Just as, based on what was said at the Fidesz congress, there is no reality that the government would take Hungary out of the European Union.

"Our electorate is quite pro-European, but that does not mean that we do not express our opinion and represent our interests"

- said the vice president of Fidesz to Index.
