The European Union (EU) is facing serious security threats from the east, so it is necessary to focus on the most important matters, which hardly include the debate over Article 7 of the EU Basic Treaty - emphasized Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in an interview published on the wpolityce.pl news portal on Monday.

The crisis threatening Europe from the east has "one source"

When asked by the Polish conservative news portal whether Russia wants war, Morawiecki replied: he hopes not, but we get a disturbing picture when we connect all the crises threatening Europe from the east, "the threads of which all lead to Moscow."

He cited the situation in Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova, the rise in gas prices, and the "possible risk" of transporting migrants from Afghanistan as examples. On closer inspection, everything has "one source", he noted.

He also touched on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and referring to the intelligence information of several states, he stated: even during the 2014 Ukrainian crisis, not as many (Russian) soldiers had gathered at the borders of Ukraine as they do now.

He also listed the "propagandistic" and hacker attacks against the West, the attacks on energy systems in the context of the latter.

At the same time, the Russian and Belarusian governments are increasing their pro-war propaganda for their own population, said the Polish Prime Minister.

Recalling his talks with the prime ministers of the Baltic countries on Sunday, Morawiecki confirmed that the states of the Baltic region similarly evaluate the weight of security risks.

A very threatening reality, real politics

Today, Poland protects the eastern wing of the EU - Morawiecki referred to the migrant crisis on the Belarusian border. He underlined: Brussels should therefore focus on fundamental issues for the entire EU. "In the unlikely event that some kind of war breaks out on or near the East Wing, I hope it never happens, would we still be dealing with the Article 7 debate?" he asked the question.

He said: there are disagreements between Brussels and Warsaw on certain issues, such as judicial reform. More important than these, however, is the current "very threatening reality, real politics", which is why, as he said, it is necessary to focus on fundamental issues for the entire EU.

The time has come "for common sense to finally prevail in the EU"

When asked whether Poland should not allow the passage of migrants to the Western countries of Europe, Morawiecki responded: Poland will never do this, "we are a serious, rule-of-law, efficient state that fulfills its obligations."

He expressed hope that Brussels understands the "serious, deepening strategic risks" in the EU's neighborhood. He emphasized: "The situation is really becoming dangerous in the East." The time has come "for common sense to finally prevail in the EU," he said.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 36,000 border violation attempts have been registered, and there have been several mass, violent attempts. According to the announcement of the border guard, another failed incident took place on Sunday evening, the siege of a group of about 150 migrants was supported by Belarusian uniformed officers.
