The results of the architectural design competition for the Recski National Memorial Park have been announced. Balázs Orbán, the Parliamentary and Strategic State Secretary of the Prime Minister's Office, said, among other things, at the event on November 30: - The forced labor camp in Recki is a symbol of communism, we must preserve its memory so that it warns future generations about the importance of freedom.

The politician recalled: during the Rákosi regime, between 1950 and 1953, the forced labor camp in Recsk operated by the State Defense Authority was the Hungarian Gulag, where political prisoners captured without trial were kept, a total of fifteen hundred people. The cruel treatment and forced labor in the quarry increased the suffering of the prisoners, many died of starvation and disease. Prime Minister Imre Nagy liquidated the camp in September 1953, but the freed prisoners were made to sign a paper saying that they could never talk about this place.

- Now a worthy memorial can be built on the site of the camp, which reminds of the atrocities that happened there, and is also a warning to future generations: freedom never comes by itself, you have to fight for it every moment - said Balázs Orbán.

The state secretary, who was the chairman of the evaluation committee of the design tender announced by the Budapest Development Center (BFK), said that ten design firms applied, and based on the unanimous decision of the jury, the winner was the consortium of Egyheted Stúdió and ZDA-Zobok Építéziroda.
