"I never said that I would abolish the minimum wage, that's what they say," claimed Péter Márki-Zay in his usual Sunday evening live check-in. He added: he only said that personally, as an economist, he does not consider the minimum wage particularly necessary or justified. He explained the latter's comment by saying that there are countries where there is no minimum wage, and people do not starve there either, the market determines the wages there.

Márki-Zay's memory must have let him down, as it is a fact that he previously said: "I am very liberal in economic matters, I don't necessarily think the minimum wage is necessary either", that is, there was no mention of the term "economist". The joint prime ministerial candidate of the left also said that "the minimum wage, if we were to go into it, has a lot of disadvantages."

In his view, if the minimum wage is too high, then entrepreneurs will not employ people because it is not worth it to them. In this way, the most unskilled people will never have a job, because "he cannot work for the minimum wage, he cannot perform such a job". In addition, he believes that the wage increase that has occurred in recent years was not handled by Fidesz, but by the economy. According to him, wages rose because people went to work in the West, there was a labor shortage, so companies are forced to pay employees more. The politician also noted that people are not paid more because the minimum wage is raised.

Apparently, a politician with not very precise knowledge of economics forgets that the increase of the minimum wage and the guaranteed minimum wage drives up other wages and the amount of other benefits and subsidies.

The public employment wage will also increase significantly in 2022, the minimum wage increase also affects, among other things, the amount of sick pay, job search allowance and gyed. In addition to these, the maximum amount of the child care fee (gyed), the student gyed, the home care fee for children (gyod), the maximum amount of the grandparent's gyed, the maximum daily amount of sick pay, the maximum amount of the jobseeker's allowance, and in connection with certain illnesses the employee's tax base reducing discount.
