Those who applied for the family tax refund by post will receive the family tax refund from Wednesday, and the support will also arrive in bank accounts by mid-February. Tünde Főrész, president of the Mária Kopp Institute, told Vasarnap.hu why this is extremely important for families raising children.

The protracted pandemic places an increasingly serious burden on families raising children. They are the ones who have to stand up in most areas of life: they work, raise children, take care of the elderly. In recognition of this achievement, the government provides significant financial assistance to families with the family tax refund, which is made possible by the outstanding results of the Hungarian economy. This is our joint success, for which we fought together, which is why it is important that the families now benefit from this success as a kind of bonus. The measure means a one-time, higher income of many hundreds of thousands, even over a million, for each family. This provides an opportunity to invest in something that has been postponed until now.

This measure is further evidence that one of the most important efforts of the government is that those who raise children will be better off financially and receive benefits compared to if they had not had children. The tax refund affects a total of around 1.9 million parents, and Hungarian families will receive a total of HUF 600 billion back. The tax refund applies to all families raising children, where the parent has a registered job. If both of them work, both of them will get back the tax they actually paid, which can reach HUF 809,000 per person. Thus, the amount of reimbursement can reach HUF 1.6 million per family. Postal delivery already started on February 2, and bank transfers will arrive by the middle of the month.

Not like before 2010, when left-wing governments treated starting a family and having children as an issue of poverty and aid. In 2021, the Hungarian economy achieved one of the fastest restarts in Europe, which was revealed by the January research of the Mária Kopp Institute on the work of Hungarian families, regardless of political affiliation, the government's measures to make everyday life easier enjoy high social support. The family tax refund was the most supported by the respondents, nine out of ten people consider it a good measure and agree with it.

The president stated that "while less than half of the children born before 2010 were born in marriage, in 2020, 70 percent of them were, and it is likely that this proportion has increased even more since then, according to our estimates, in 2021, eight out of ten babies born will have his parents are married. Compared to these positive Hungarian processes, in the developed world, especially during the pandemic, there are movements that are diametrically opposed to this: fewer marriages, more divorces, fewer and fewer children born in marriage. This also shows that, compared to other parts of the world, families in Hungary have not been left alone, they can count on support even in the most difficult situations. For us, marriage and family are values that are protected under all circumstances."
