The elections are approaching, so the EU declarations are multiplying, of course they are trying to grapple with opposition unity. Just now, 444.hu conducted an interview with Katarina Barley, a German social democratic politician who is currently one of the vice-presidents of the European Parliament. The most interesting sentences of Friday's conversation:

  • "(...) it is obvious that Orbán, his family and friends are stealing public money. They steal Hungarian and European people's money. Everyone knows the name of Lőrinc Mészáros - how can a gas fitter be a billionaire?"
  • "It is also clear that both the Commissioners responsible for the rule of law, Didier Reynders and Vera Jourová, very strongly advocated the earlier launch of the mechanism, but in the end nothing happened. There has to be a reason for that, and if it was the deal in question, I would consider it shameful.”
  • "He needed the (so-called child protection) law to build his lie that it's all because of homosexuals."
  • "In Hungary, everything that could limit power has already been dismantled: the press, the audit office, the ombudsman, everything is under political control. And now they also want to get rid of European control.”

Katarina Barley is one of the harshest foreign critics of the Orbán government. In October 2020, he called the Hungarian Prime Minister short-handed and corrupt. According to him, "Viktor Orbán has been working for ten years to dismantle the rule of law step by step, and unfortunately he has gone very far in this, and his party colleagues in the European People's Party have watched it passively."
