State support for higher education will increase from HUF 210 billion this year to more than HUF 400 billion next year, Minister of Innovation and Technology László Palkovics announced when he laid the foundation stone of the Budapest University of Economics' new central library and student center in the capital on Thursday.

In the next period, an unprecedented amount of HUF 2,700 billion development funds will be available to Hungarian higher education , the minister said. Of this, HUF 2,100 billion already has the resources, and the government is working to raise the remaining amount, he added.

László Palkovics believed that the government strategy formulated in 2014, aimed at changing the level of higher education, which led to the creation of a maintenance structure independent of the state, proved to be successful. This is proven by the fact that 11 percent more people applied to higher education institutions this year than last year. Of the 102,000 applicants, 67,000 were admitted, 81 percent of them to state-financed training. 65 percent of the applicants submitted their applications to a model-changing university, and out of the 280,000 students, 180,000 are already studying at a university that is not maintained by the state...

... László Palkovics also said that the financing contracts with the model-changing institutions, which include performance and quality requirements, will be finalized in the next few days, and they can be signed next week...
