The European Commission disbursed 2.17 billion euros in loans (about 806 billion forints) to three EU member states, including 147 million euros (about 55 billion forints) to Hungary in the framework of the EU program (SURE) aimed at mitigating increased unemployment due to the coronavirus epidemic; the EU transferred the entire amount of the loan to Hungary

the Brussels body announced on Tuesday.

The amount disbursed on Tuesday is the eighth tranche of financial support provided from the sources of the SURE fund, through the payments Hungary received 147 million euros, Poland 1.5 billion euros, and Portugal 523 million euros.

The European Commission thus fulfilled the loan amount approved for Hungary within the framework of the program. During the fifteen-year validity period of the credit support, Hungary will receive a total of 651 million euros (about HUF 190 billion) in financial support from EU sources. The Union disbursed 200 million euros to Hungary in December 2020, and 304 million euros (about HUF 108 billion) at the beginning of February 2021.

According to the information provided by the EU Commission, the SURE loans disbursed in the form of long-term loans on favorable terms will help the three member states cope with the sudden jump in public expenditure aimed at preserving jobs after the coronavirus pandemic. From the loan support, the three member states can cover the costs directly related to the financing of the national employment systems with reduced working hours and other similar measures introduced in response to the pandemic, including those introduced for the self-employed.

At the beginning of 2020, the European Union created a financing tool called SURE (support for mitigating unemployment risks in emergency situations) with the aim of helping to protect jobs and employees who have been in a difficult situation due to the coronavirus epidemic throughout the EU. In addition to preserving jobs and maintaining the level of employment, the support is intended to facilitate the financing of certain health-related measures.
