President Zuzana Čaputová and Prime Minister Eduard Heger are dragging us into the war in Ukraine, stated Robert Fico, the president of the opposition Smer-SD, in response to Slovakia's gift of its S-300 air defense system to Ukraine. Fico submits a motion of no confidence against the government.
"The gift of the multimillion-dollar S-300 air defense system to Ukraine is an act of war with unforeseeable consequences for Slovakia," Fico posted on the social network.
According to him, the S-300 system protected Slovakia's nuclear power plants and industrial centers and is more efficient and accurate than the Patriot air defense system.
"Čaputová and Heger gave away the only air defense system owned by Slovakia and accepted instead the American Patriot, which is not our property and we cannot manage it," said Fico.
According to him, the Patriot system can hit six types of targets at a long distance, be it airplanes, missiles or drones. "It will be used in the Ukrainian-Russian conflict, which means that Slovakia will be a part of this conflict with a very effective weapon," Fico stated, adding that the interests of the country were not at all in mind.
He announced that Smer-SD will hold an "anti-war" demonstration on Sunday, April 10, at Slavín in Bratislava.
Ľuboš Blaha, the representative of Smer-SD, announced at the press conference on Friday that they will present a motion of no confidence against the government next week, and they have already agreed on this with the other opposition parties.
According to Hlas, the transfer of the S-300 system poses a threat to Slovakia.
The non-parliamentary Hlas-SD believes that the transfer of the S-300 air defense system to Ukraine poses a threat to Slovakia's defense capability. Defense Minister Jaroslav Naď (OĽaNO) will be called upon to explain this step, informed Patrícia Medveď Macíková, the spokesperson of the party.
According to Hlas, by handing over the system,
the current Slovak government has deceived the population. The party recalls the defense minister's words that the S-300 will only be removed from the possession of the Slovak armed forces if it is replaced with a suitable system.
"This promise has not been fulfilled so far, and even recently Minister Naď himself spoke of a period of several months or years"
the party pointed out. He added that it is clear that the installed Patriot system does not completely replace the S-300 system.
