According to a Czech newspaper, the authorities faced the "problem of dual citizenship" in connection with the Roma who fled Ukraine.
Ukrainian refugees with dual Ukrainian-Hungarian citizenship, but who prove themselves with a Hungarian passport, cannot count on any official help in the Czech Republic, pointed out the Czech Interior Minister Vít Rakusan. The independent left-wing newspaper Právo wrote on Thursday that the Czech authorities faced the problem of dual citizenship in connection with the Roma who fled Ukraine. Many Roma refugees have Hungarian passports in addition to Ukrainian ones.

"Those who prove themselves with a Hungarian passport are not entitled to temporary protection or social assistance in the Czech Republic. Only Ukrainians (citizens) have the right to temporary aid," the minister stated to the newspaper. He noted: these Roma should seek help from Hungary, because some of them originally come from there.

Some of the Roma refugees in Ukraine only know Hungarian

According to Vít Rakusan, about 1,200 Ukrainian Roma refugees have arrived in the Czech Republic so far, "who are treated like anyone else" . The main problem with the Roma is that they are large families - sometimes consisting of 20-30 people - for whom it is very difficult to find suitable, common accommodation.

According to Emil Vorác, director of the non-governmental organization Khamoro, some of the Roma refugees in Ukraine do not speak Romani, Ukrainian or Russian, they only know Hungarian. There is also a problem here, that the information sheets issued by the Czech authorities are all in Ukrainian, which these Roma do not understand.

The Czech Ministry of the Interior recently established a special fund of 10 million crowns (155 million forints) to help Ukrainian refugees from different socio-cultural backgrounds. At the beginning of the week, the representatives of the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Labor, as well as NGOs, discussed the problems that have arisen in connection with the Roma refugees in Ukraine and agreed on a special aid program. Part of this is that Roma refugees are placed in different regions of the country by family to prevent the formation of isolated Roma ghettos, pointed out Jelena Siladjzic, the director of the NGO Slovo21. According to the information published in the Prague press, the number of Roma Hungarian refugees in Ukraine and Subcarpathia can be put at a few hundred.
