The Hungarian community in Vojvodina proved with its record turnout in the parliamentary election that the motherland can count on it, and we say that they can also count on us in the next period, emphasized Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó on Tuesday in Szabadka.

Péter Szijjártó announced that Hungarians from Vojvodina participated in the historically significant Hungarian parliamentary election in greater numbers than ever before, the more than 60,900 votes cast in Subotica is one and a half times the number cast in 2018. The Vojvodina Hungarians thus contributed to the continuation of national governance in Hungary.

Péter Szijjártó also pointed out that the election was not only about the future of the country, but also about the future of the nation, because in the case of Hungarians, the borders of the country and the nation are not the same. It was important for the Hungarian government that all members of the Hungarian nation could participate in the decision, while the left would take away the decision-making right from those living across the border.

The head of the ministry emphasized that the Hungarian government will continue the work, and this will allow the Vojvodina economic development program to continue, as a result of which 167 billion forints of investment have been created in Vojvodina.

He expressed his joy that the Vojvodina Hungarian Association (VMSZ) is able to independently form a faction in the Serbian parliament again after the Serbian elections, and that the presidential candidate supported by the VMSZ, Aleksandar Vucic, can continue his work for the next five years.

In response to a journalist's question, Péter Szijjártó stated that Hungary had voted for all sanctions against Russia, but asked its European partners to be prudent, as "sanctions on crude oil and natural gas imports would impose a disproportionate burden on Hungary and practically undermine the country's ability to function".

"That's why we asked that, in order to maintain European unity and avoid disproportionate damage, no proposals should be presented that would limit natural gas or crude oil deliveries from Russia to Europe," he explained, then added that the Hungarians might be speaking the most decisively and loudly about this , but not only Hungarians share this opinion. He announced that he himself had fought decisively in Brussels to ensure that not only EU member states, but also candidate countries, including Serbia, enjoyed exemptions for energy, crude oil and natural gas shipments, and this was achieved.

István Pásztor, the president of the Hungarian Federation of Vojvodina, reminded at the joint press conference that the VMSZ had three goals before the April 3 elections, and all three goals were achieved, that is, the Fidesz-KDNP won the election in Hungary, the VMSZ retained his parliamentary position, and Aleksandar Vucic, nominated by VMSZ, remained the president of the republic.

He added that he discussed with Péter Szijjártó that the next stages of the cooperation would be formulated in a short time so that the joint work could continue.

"The axis that we created in recent years remains. The building of Hungarian-Serbian relations can be unbroken in the coming time as well, and we think that this is the most important priority of all of us, considering the times that we are a part of," concluded István Pásztor.
