On Wednesday, the Slovak Parliament rejected the request of the General Prosecutor's Office, the representatives did not agree to the preliminary arrest of Robert Fico (Smer-SD). Of the 150 representatives present, 74 voted for its release, 49 against it, 19 abstained, and 8 did not vote.

A member of parliament can only be placed in pre-trial detention after

the legislature agrees to this, and then the court orders pretrial detention.

The National Law Enforcement Agency (NAKA) initiated criminal proceedings against Fico as part of the Twilight operation, and also suspected former Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák. Both of them are suspected of creating and supporting a criminal association, abuse of official authority, and continuing to commit the endangerment of commercial, banking, postal, telecommunications, and tax secrets.

In the case, an investigation was also launched against Nyitra entrepreneur Norbert B. and former national police chief Tibor G. The debate on the extradition of the president of Smer-SD started last week. The representatives of his party emphasized that there is no reason to put Fico in custody for investigation, and that the governing parties are abusing the criminal law and using it for political purposes.

The majority of speakers from the government party said that the court will make a decision, not the parliament, and that the legislature will only give way to the judiciary.

The result of the parliamentary vote is the biggest defeat of Igor Matovič's entire political career, Richard Sulík published about the president of OĽaNO on the social network.

"This is his biggest defeat in his entire political career, and he was defeated not only by his favorite coalition partner, but also by two of his own representatives. They can never talk about the fight against corruption again," Sulík stated.

The Association also reacted to today's event. This coalition has completely lost its credibility today. After two years of chaos, incompetence during the pandemic and the economic crisis, he also sank his own election flagship.
