In today's post on the social media page of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, he emphasized that the Russian-Ukrainian war is not Hungary's war. He added, "we have such a position, it is called peace. We are not on the side of one or the other warring party, we are on the side of peace."
Every country has its own historical experiences. This is a war here. We have war experience, so at the beginning it is necessary to clarify who is at war with whom, and what is our relationship to this. According to the Hungarian perception, this is a Russian-Ukrainian war. We do not equalize because this war should not have started and the reason it started is because the Russians attacked Ukraine. So let's not confuse the positions of the opposing parties, but that still makes it a Russian-Ukrainian war. This is not our war. This is not Hungary's war.
When a war breaks out in which we are not directly involved, the question to be decided is what is our relationship to it. There are countries, Hungary was sometimes like this throughout history, which chooses a side and sides with one of the parties. But that's my understanding, and I think Hungarian historical experience and Hungarian common sense also say that you don't have to choose a side, you have to choose a position. It must be determined what the Hungarian interest is, which corresponds to Hungarian interests and is also morally correct, and this must be represented.
We have such a position, it is called peace. We are not on the side of one or the other warring party, we are on the side of peace. Every step that I take, and that the Hungarian government takes, serves the purpose of an immediate ceasefire and the start of peace negotiations as soon as possible.
