The conference series on the Future of Europe started last year has come to an end. On this occasion, the Foundation for Civil Hungary organized a conference, during which MEPs Tamás Deutsch and Gál Kinga and Justice Minister Judit Varga evaluated the results.

Tamás Deutsch, head of the Fidesz European Parliament delegation, said in his speech that the official purpose of the conference on the future of Europe was to collect the opinions of Europeans on the direction the European Union should move forward. He said that it started promisingly, but in the end, unfortunately, it turned out according to the usual Brussels scenario. The Brussels bureaucrats did not want to know the opinion of the Europeans, but wanted to artificially create social justification for their own federalist ideas, he added. Deutsch declared that the conference on the Future of Europe had failed. The Union is seriously misrepresenting its role, in Brussels they believe that only their interpretation of the world can be correct.

In her speech, Minister of Justice Judit Varga was the first to present the Hungarian results of the conference series, saying that based on these results, it is clear that the basic EU treaty needs to be amended. The Treaty of Lisbon, in its current form, enables the stealthy expansion of powers and the fact that Brussels tries to surpass the nation-states. The minister stated that in order for the union to function again as it did when Hungary joined it, it is necessary to amend the treaties. Therefore, he will also propose this position to the Hungarian government. Among other things, the proposal deals with the issue of the rule of law and the regulation of decision-making, the preservation of the sovereignty of the member states, and the restoration of European democracy.
