András Schiffer spoke in Kontextus about the responsibility of "independent fact-checkers" in the current conflict. According to the former politician, by unilaterally banning Russian propaganda from the mainstream media, they took away the right of news consumers to form their own image of the events of the war.
Liner.hu writes that András Schiffer did not mince words, he clearly stated what he thinks about fact-checkers, who, in his opinion, "represent at least as much danger to freedom and democracy as the censors of totalitarian regimes" . András Schiffer spoke in Kontextus about what he thinks about the so-called fact-checkers, because "it is good to state clearly that these fact-checkers are today the biggest enemies of freedom in the world".
The job of these fact-checkers is to "don't think!" They will tell you what the facts are!
he declared. He said that he does not like the term "censor" so much in this situation because totalitarian dictatorships typically had censorship, but the nature of these fact-checkers and neoliberal capitalism is different, to the extent that, for example, during communism in Hungary, "it was clear that the so-called anti-system views are blocked". In connection with the war in Ukraine, Schiffer suggested that the situation was the same.
It cannot be denied that there was Russian propaganda, it was clear that Russia Today was conveying Putin's will, but it is important: you could have known about it. The European Union acted on this by deciding to shut down all Russian propaganda. So those who like to assume and present themselves as liberals take away the right from all of us to be able to properly consider the Russian position and American propaganda - because American propaganda "of course" does not exist, there are only facts that need to be checked, he added.
Let's be clear: those who are fact-checkers consider us minors, deny us the ability to consider facts, information, data, deny that we have the same right to make moral judgments as they do, and want to dictate what we should think. .
These are not liberals, these are the enemies of freedom.
Today, fact-checkers pose at least as much danger to freedom and democracy as the censors of totalitarian systems, he emphasized.
