According to Katarina Barley, Hungary abuses the principle of unanimity in the EU as a tool of blackmail. In an interview with MDR Aktuell, the German social democratic politician spoke about Hungary's right to vote in the European Union.

Barley, who is the vice-president of the European Parliament, explained this by saying that, in his opinion, Hungary abuses the principle of unanimity and uses it for blackmail.

Due to Hungary's resistance, the EU refrained from introducing sanctions against Patriarch Kirill in the new sanctions package against Russia adopted on Thursday. According to Barley, an EU member state's right to vote can be suspended for violating the rule of law.

Precisely in Hungary, it is no longer possible to talk about democratic conditions and the rule of law

Barley added.
