Today, the European Parliament voted on the large-scale EU climate package, which was presented by the European Commission last year. Among other things, the representatives will vote on the expansion of emissions trading, the ban on new cars powered by internal combustion engines from 2035 and the compensation mechanism for carbon dioxide emission limits.

As it was known, Frans Timmermans would have made owners of non-electric cars pay a carbon tax. According to the Dutch vice-president of the European Commission, Europe is not doing well in the fight against climate change, efforts must be redoubled, and part of this would be the punishment of motorists. Timmermans is the one who recently said that you don't always have to wash the clothes, just air them out.

In the parliamentary debate on the EU climate package called Fit for 55, the Commissioner responsible for the European Green Agreement said that the resources spent on renewable energy will remain in Europe, while the money spent on fossil fuels will go into the pocket of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In yesterday's debate , Ádám Kósa from Fidesz spoke about the fact that utility costs and fuel prices are increasing to an astonishing extent in the member states, so it is not a good idea to come up with proposals that further increase these burdens.

Enikő Győri, a member of the European Parliament of Fidesz, believed that the European Parliament showed with the current debate how even a good initiative can be made untenable.

" The European Commission's climate package is irresponsible and has harmful consequences for families, " said Fidesz EP representative Edina Tóth in Strasbourg, after the EP debate. The politician said: the green transition is important, but it must be reasonable and efficient. In other words, it cannot hinder economic growth and cannot go against the interests of citizens.

Minutes ago, the vote took place and common sense prevailed. The EP rejected the proposal on the climate tax and sent it back to the Commission for revision.

Fidesz EP representative Edina Tóth pointed out: the result of the vote clearly shows that the climate package is bleeding from several wounds, and it was not possible to get political or social support for the proposal. "It is unfortunate that Brussels' yet another thoughtless and irresponsible climate policy action plan that contradicts common sense would have burdened citizens and families with the price of greening, and this is unacceptable to us."

The representative reminded that the proposed climate tax threatens the reduction of utilities and would further increase inflation. "We will continue to fight so that this proposal is not accepted. We are committed to the green transition as a common goal, but not at all costs. Our position is clear: the cost of the transition should not be paid by Hungarian and European citizens, but by the big polluters. We will continue on the path we have started, and we will prevent new taxes from being imposed on Hungarian citizens with EU regulations!" - added Edina Tóth.
