Safety and peace come first! - emphasizes the President of the Republic Katalin Novák in her Facebook post on Friday, who arrived in the Romanian capital for the summit of the Bucharest Nine.
Katalin Novák wrote in her post, "I arrived at the Bucharest Nine summit at the invitation of the Romanian Presidents Klaus Iohannis and Polish President Andrzej Duda, reminding that the consultation between the B9s was initiated by Poland and Romania seven years ago, so that the NATO member states in our region would have a unified representation in the alliance.
After the meeting, the Hungarian head of state announced on social media that the statement adopted today by the Bucharest Nine clearly and unambiguously reflects the position he formulated in ten points in his inaugural speech a month ago.
"We strongly condemn Russia's unjustified aggression against Ukraine, which has destroyed the peace of Europe by causing enormous human suffering and destruction. We mourn the tragic loss of life. We confirmed our commitment to the sovereignty and democratic functioning of Ukraine. This also means that fully ensuring the rights of the Transcarpathian Hungarian minority is the obligation of the Ukrainian state at all times," wrote Katalin Novák.
Because of the war, the safe supply of food can be endangered in those areas where living conditions are still difficult, so we can expect a further increase in migration, pointed out the head of state, who also spoke about: the development of the Hungarian military is progressing at a fast pace, by 2024 we will complete the old arrears and the defense budget will reach 2 percent of GDP. "We fulfill our commitments and will not stop: the security of our country, our region and our allies comes first," he pointed out.
The security policy consultation of the Baltic states, the Visegrad countries, as well as Bulgaria and Romania was initiated by Romania and Poland in 2014, following the Russian annexation of the Crimean peninsula, in order to jointly advocate for the strengthening of NATO's eastern wing.
The current summit was also called by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and Polish President Andrzej Duda because of the war in Ukraine. Their goal has not changed: they want the B9s to act unitedly to strengthen the security of the eastern wing at the NATO summit to be held in Madrid on June 28-30.
Katalin Novák and the other participants of the summit were received by the two hosts of the B9 summit, the heads of state of Romania and Poland, at the presidential office in Bucharest. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, originally expected in Romania, can only participate in the meeting online due to his illness.
