More like this?! On the occasion of the Festive Book Week, the Reformed Curriculum Development Group organized an illustration exhibition and program series at the Evangelical National Museum in cooperation with the institution. The opening of the exhibition was held on Friday afternoon with a round table discussion.
Regarding the exhibition, Judit Farkas, the head of the project, said that three main aspects were used in the selection of the illustrations in the exhibition. The first was to have illustrations that are "nooky", so they make the reading environment homey for the little ones. These were selected, for example, from the ABC kuckó publication and the literary text collection.
The second aspect was the presentation of spiritual content, which is also an important element in the development of Reformed curriculum. Such graphics were chosen, for example, from the publication Stories from the Bible.
The third sign was adventuring, with which they tried to appeal to seniors and high school students as well. These illustrations encourage you to travel through space and time or invite you to create. Here, for example, a selection was made from the publication Idő kereke, but also the workbooks that were made for younger children, but still encourage children to create or take some kind of action. In some books, only the graphics were highlighted, but in other cases the illustrations were displayed together with text or tasks so that their context was also visible.
Illustrations for publications are not always made according to the same process. In the case of the school browser and the related workbook, for example, they looked for an illustrator with a very specific idea, and told him exactly what they wanted: to display the triple unity of the family, the church and the school, the drawings should also help first-graders get to know the school, and to have a browser in nature. In the case of the ABC nook, there was only the concept of the entire book, namely that the voice should be differentiated, that the "nook" atmosphere should be created during the familiarization with reading, and they only asked that the pairs of pages work together, the rest was left to the graphic designer. And there were also cases when tenders were put out, and the one whose idea best suited what they envisioned was chosen.
If we want the joy and buzz to reach the children, then the participants in the work process must feel the same, said Zsolt Miklya, who had such a "buzz" and joy during the collection of materials. He thinks that, on the one hand, it is great that quality is a Reformed specificity in the development of textbooks, but it would not be good if it remained like this, but it should have an outward effect so that the whole society is enriched, and this is also a missionary opportunity.
Regarding the further tasks, the participants agreed that the completed materials should be delivered to the teachers and introduced to them. The door must not be closed to external experts either, and as many actors as possible must be consulted during the work.
