On Friday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán welcomed Huszain al-Muszallam, the president of the International Federation of Aquatic Sports (FINA), who came to Budapest for the World Aquatic Championships organized by Hungary, in the Carmelita Monastery, said Bertalan Havasi, the Prime Minister's press chief.

It was announced in February that Budapest will host the 2022 Aquatic World Championships after the withdrawal of Fukuoka, Japan. According to FINA's previous announcement, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and FINA President Huszain al-Muszallam agreed on the World Cup. The Hungarian capital will host the world championship between June 18 and July 3, for the second time after 2017.

The international association justified its decision on the World Cup in Budapest by saying that this will give the athletes the opportunity to participate in a worldwide event this summer as well.

"We are very fortunate to have hosts who share our passion for aquatics and have the will, ability and flexibility to host FINA's most prestigious event," the statement quoted the head of FINA as saying.

The two-week sports event is hosted by Budapest together with three large rural cities, Szeged, Debrecen and Sopron. The approximately 2,300 athletes can show what they are capable of in five sports at several locations, including the pools of the Hajós Alfréd National Sports Pool in Margitsziget and the Duna Aréna, as well as on Lake Lupa.
