The government is not even willing to discuss the possible Russian gas embargo, because the security of Hungary's energy supply cannot be a matter of compromise, Péter Szijjártó stated on Monday in Luxembourg.
According to the press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the head of the department, upon arriving at the meeting of the ministers of the European Union member states dealing with energy matters, reported that he was participating in the meeting with a clear mandate, according to which the government is not even willing to discuss the gas embargo, since in our country it is "practically the economy and the country would mean its inoperability".
He said that the meeting will also discuss the creation of joint procurement platforms. "We have no problem with the European Union looking for new sources of gas, but participation in this can only be voluntary, no obligation can be imposed on the member states in terms of procurement," he underlined.
Péter Szijjártó then touched on the fact that serious technical problems are currently being reported on the natural gas transport routes from Russia to Western Europe. As he stated, in this regard, Hungary expects the European Commission to investigate whether this is really caused by the fact that the equipment required for the operation of the pipeline system, previously sent for maintenance, did not return from Canada.
"If this is true, then we expect some kind of measures from the European Commission to ensure that European natural gas supply does not fall into a crisis in the short term," he said.
The minister pointed out: it can be seen that a national emergency had to be declared in several countries in Western Europe.
"The war taking place in our neighborhood and the resulting sanctions caused a very serious price increase on the European energy market, then as a second step a very serious quantity problem arose, and then it got into a vicious circle, and the quantity challenges meant another price rise," he pointed out.
Finally, he announced that Hungary is already three-quarters of the mandatory amount required by the EU for gas storage.
