The Russian-Ukrainian war will not end quickly, as all wars end with negotiations, and we see no sign of them yet - said Péter Szijjártó in an interview with Magyar Nemzet. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade also spoke to the paper about the migration pressure on the southern border and Hungarian-Polish relations.
Péter Szijjártó explained about the Russian-Ukrainian conflict: there is no hope that peace negotiations dealing with substantive issues will begin.
According to the minister, this is a problem, on the one hand, because people die senselessly every day, and on the other hand, because all this is happening in our neighborhood. "And every minute that goes by with war in the neighborhood is a security risk for us. We don't want that, so our most important task is to guarantee two things: Hungary's security and that we don't get involved in this war," he said.
He went on to say that everyone in Europe has now realized that a permanent inflationary environment is being created as a result of the war, and that the European economy is facing extraordinary difficulties as a result of the sanctions measures. simply because
because energy carriers are the basis of all economic activities,
and the dramatic increase in the price of energy carriers is a deep blow to the European economy. Today, the question is no longer how much a particular energy carrier costs, but whether it is available, he noted.
He also explained the movement of the currency markets with the gloomy mood caused by the uncertainty on the market of energy carriers, pointing out that until there is peace, there will be no positive mood in the European economic environment.
The minister also spoke about Hungarian-Ukrainian relations, for which the Russian-Ukrainian conflict created a special situation.
He reminded that before the war, the Hungarian-Ukrainian relationship was quite strained, which resulted from the fact that the Ukrainian legislation reduced the rights of the Hungarian community practically every week. And the Hungarian diplomacy asked that they not take away what they had so far. According to him, when the war broke out, Hungarian diplomacy temporarily put this issue in parentheses, since the existing tension in bilateral relations should not be discussed in a war situation.
But we still have to settle this issue with the Ukrainians once
- he indicated, at the same time calling the unscrupulous accusations against Hungary unfair, which, in his opinion, must be categorically rejected.
He emphasized: we Hungarians understand, of course, that their country was attacked, and we constantly say that we condemn the aggression, we condemn the Russian military attack against Ukraine. He explained that, in parallel, Hungary is carrying out the largest humanitarian operation in its history - it has already admitted more than 830,000 refugees. "We don't expect them to say thank you. That's not why we do it. We do it because it's the right thing to do," the minister stated.
The minister spoke about the fact that the war will test Visegrad cooperation and Hungarian-Polish relations. He reminded us: there were always points that we saw differently, but we always strengthened the areas in which we agreed. In the West, disagreements were always interpreted as the end of Visegrad cooperation, but these are ridiculous accusations, he said. He added: it was always clear in the Visegrad cooperation that we thought somewhat differently about the European cooperation with Russia than the others. The end of the war, on the other hand, will once again create a much calmer cooperation environment between the Visegrád countries and the Hungarians and the Poles, Péter Szijjártó indicated.
