Justice Minister Judit Varga remembered on her community page that 17 years ago, on May 1st, we joined the European Union.
The entry promised good hopes, but it seems that not everyone wants to serve the original intention of the founding fathers. Judit Varga shared the following thoughts on the anniversary in her Facebook post:
" Europe was dreamed of as a union of Christian nations. For us, this is not a dream, but a reality, a job and a goal for which we will always work.
May 1, 2004 will remain memorable for many of us, as Hungary became a member of the European Union on this day. We thought we had joined a European community that, carrying on the spirit of the founders of the EU, would form a strong Europe based on strong nations. Over time, however, it has been proven that preserving the heritage left to us by our ancestors is not in everyone's interest. From 2010, instead of constructive debates, a political witch hunt began, where common sense no longer matters, and where dialogue was replaced by smear campaigns launched for ideological reasons. And the goal has now become obvious: the creation of a new, supranational Europe.
Despite all the difficulties and ill will , we remain, even if many in Brussels wish otherwise. As Europe's memory, as guardians of the founding treaties and the status quo, we look after Robert Schuman and Helmuth Kohl . We persevere because we know that there is no unified Europe without Hungary.
I am confident that the discussions on the future of Europe in the coming months will be able to provide new answers to the continent's biggest challenges, be it the coronavirus or migration.
Until then, always remember the motto of the EU: "Unity in diversity!" Where diversity is at least as important as unity.”
