Now only the league title is missing from Sepsi OSK's portfolio, after the team from Tříszék won the Romanian Super Cup by defeating the defending champion Cluj CFR 2-1. The sky's the limit? László Diószegi, the owner of the club, brought his team up from the 5th division to the top division in 10 years, and although he is a realist, his dream is the championship title and participation in the BL. Now, anyway, he beat the former champion!
Now they can pat László Diószegi on the back not only for winning the Romanian Cup. On Saturday evening, Sepsi OSK Arad performed another historic feat, defeating the Romanian champion in the Super Cup final, which was the official season opener and the premiere of VAR technology in Romania.
You could say it was a handicap race, as the Cluj-Napoca team took the lead in the second minute, and then for a good quarter of an hour they took the breath away from the red and whites from Tříszék. However, no further goals were scored, OSK equalized in the extra time of the half, and in the beginning of the balanced second half, Rondon secured the victory - it is almost a scheduled quirk of fate that the 36-year-old Venezuelan striker was advised against the CFR during the last championship.
The Sepsi OSK team and its supporters made the cup victory unforgettable with a national celebration.
The team from Tříszék, which was accompanied by more than 500 fans to the western border town, has won eight of its ten matches since February and lost none, so the success story that has lasted for almost half a year continues.
The League 1 championship starting on July 15 offers an opportunity to continue writing the fairy tale, in the first round in the home of the bronze medalist CS Universitatea Craiova, which was recently a sure victim of Sepsi OSK. Then the UEFA Conference League can follow, in the second qualifying round of which Cristiano Bergodi's team can probably try to advance, which is considered another historic act, against Olimpija Ljubljana.
Despite the recent successes, sanity prevails at the club, president László Diószegi said that they are still far from winning the championship.
– That club would need more money, the player squad should also be strengthened. For the time being, we would be satisfied if we made it to the upper house playoffs of the championship, and there we would repeat our best ranking so far, the fourth place. It would be just icing on the cake if we could stand on the podium, said the club manager.
