The goal of Hungarian family policy is to restore the social respectability of having children, President Katalin Novák said on Tuesday at the Academia Paulista de Letras event in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

In his presentation, the President of the Hungarian Republic explained the results and objectives of the Hungarian family policy. He said that the Hungarian population has been decreasing every year since 1981, so it became necessary to stop it. In order to have the desired children and to have as many children in the family as the parents want, measures had to be taken to facilitate this process.

Katalin Novák highlighted:

the social respectability of having children must be restored, for this it was necessary to ensure that those who do not have children do not do well financially. Hungary supports all this with, among other things, tax benefits, reduction of loans, support for home creation, and the construction of a nursery school network.

The President of the Republic's first trip outside of Europe was to Brazil.

He pointed out: the basic law adopted in 2011 also stated that marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman based on mutual decision. The Hungarian Basic Law also states that life is entitled to protection from conception, and recently the sentence that the father is a man and the mother is a woman was added to the Basic Law.

Katalin Novák emphasized: Hungary spends more than six percent of its GDP on supporting families.

Brazil is world champion in football, we are world champions in supporting families, he said, adding: I want to make having children fashionable.

Explaining the results of family policy, he said: in Hungary, the number of marriages has doubled in the last decade, the number of abortions has halved, and in parallel, the desire to have children is constantly increasing.

Before her presentation, Katalin Novák presented Ferenc Hegyi, the president of the Hungarian House in Sao Paulo, with the Knight's Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit for his selfless service to the preservation of the identity of Hungarians living in Brazil and the development of their community life for several decades, as well as to the Latin American Regional Meeting of the Hungarian Diaspora Council in recognition of his valuable work.

At the award ceremony, Katalin Novák drew attention to people who are proud of being Hungarian. He emphasized that it is possible to be a proud Hungarian in Budapest, Lendva, Marosvásárhely and Sao Paulo. He said that someone can be a proud Hungarian even ten thousand kilometers from Budapest, and there can also be someone who lives in Budapest and yet is not proud of being Hungarian.

It's good to be among people who are proud to be Hungarian, and who are not only Hungarian, but also Brazilian, who live with a double identity. Ferenc Hegyi is also such a person - he pointed out, adding:

As the President of the Republic of Hungary, I brought the love of the Hungarian people here to you in Sao Paulo.

So far, more than 1.1 million people have taken advantage of the opportunity to take up Hungarian citizenship, so we had the pleasure of more than 1.1 million Hungarian people in the last decade, he emphasized.

As another support, he mentioned the introduction of the Umbilical Cord program by the mother country, thanks to which every Hungarian child born outside Hungary now receives a one-time maternity allowance and a baby bond.

Thirdly, he talked about the scholarships, which offer students the opportunity to live their Hungarianness and learn the Hungarian language.

Katalin Novák recalled that on Monday she had a meeting with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, with whom she prayed for the end of the war that is now taking place in Hungary's neighborhood as soon as possible.
