As soon as the new Ukrainian language law entered into force, the first fine was already imposed for breaking it, and not just anyone. Tarasz Kremin, the state commissioner responsible for language protection, announced that Volodymyr Zelenskyi can expect a serious fine, because the Ukrainian president committed the terrible crime of speaking in English and Russian in public. This is called licking the ice cream back!

According to Kremin , Zelenskyi broke the law when he spoke in a language other than Ukrainian , for example he used German and Russian in addition to English - for this reason, he can be fined up to 12,000 Ukrainian hryvnias. The official use of the official language was checked between March 1 and June 30.

The inspectors focused on television broadcasts, the official websites of central executive authorities, local government bodies, the military administration, and platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Telegram. So far, no one has been punished for speaking in a language other than Ukrainian, but it is possible that Zelenskiy could set a precedent, writes Új Szó.

Today, July 16, the language law came into force in Ukraine, thereby depriving national minorities of their right to their mother tongue: from now on, the citizens of the country, who are now legally considered second class, can only speak Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, and Russian in churches and during private conversations.
