The European Commission presented a new package of proposals on Wednesday, the aim of which is to reduce gas consumption in Europe by 15 percent by next spring, and member states must contribute to gas reserves and be ready to share it.

The EU body proposes a new Council Regulation on coordinated measures to reduce gas demand. I would set a goal for all member states to reduce gas consumption by 15 percent between August 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023.

They would also authorize the committee to announce a "union alert" regarding the security of supply after consultation with the member states, which would require a mandatory gas demand reduction for all member states.

Ursula von der Leyen, even before the outbreak of the war, the Russians deliberately kept the amount of gas delivered low, thereby causing an energy crisis in Europe. He sees that energy security is at risk at the European level, but if the member states act unitedly, they can overcome the obstacles. According to the president, there is a need to act quickly and there is also a need for solidarity - according to which all member states must contribute to stockpiling gas and be ready to share it. Ursula von der Leyen said that she knows that these are challenging times, but it is necessary to be organized and show unity and solidarity.

The vice president of the committee, Frans Timmermans, also spoke at the press conference, who emphasized that

reductions are currently voluntary, but will become mandatory if the situation worsens.
