The Belgian liberal member of the European Parliament (EP) angrily reported on his social media portal that "After Viktor Orbán liquidated all free institutions and silenced all independent voices in Hungary, his next project is the destruction of European democracy." Guy Verhofstadt therefore asked himself and his followers a poetic question saying "When will everyone finally see how dangerous (OV) is and stop supporting it in any way?"
What made the radical left-wing representative of the EP lose his cool so much that Viktor Orbán the destroyer of not only Hungarian but also European democracy? Dániel Deme asks the question in Magyar Hírlap.
Scrolling down a little, however, it turns out that the Belgian politician, Katalin Cseh, reacted with such fervor to the previous post of the momentary EP representative under investigation in corruption cases.
In it, the left-wing politician said, "The Fidesz majority of the Hungarian Parliament has just adopted a resolution calling for the dissolution of the European Parliament. Yes, they despise democracy that much. But we remain the fiercest opponents of Orbán's regime & we will never be silenced."
The representative of the five-percent dwarf party, which entered into a coalition with Jobbik, did not reveal who else besides the Hungarian electorate would silence his political movement, nor even what he bases his statements about the EP's intention to destroy or dismantle (in English). The representatives of Fidesz have recently stated many times about the need to transform the EP and to strengthen the role of national parliaments, but not about dissolution.
On the sidelines of the series of conferences on the future of Europe Viktor Orbán also noted that "European democracy must be led out of the dead end where the European Parliament governed" , but there is no call for dissolution in this statement either. The Prime Minister also stated earlier that the EP "only represents its own party, ideological and institutional interests, it does not add to, but takes away from, the strength of the European Union".
All of this is far from the "demolition" that Katalin Čeh thought she discovered in the government declarations, and it is not really understandable why she is so bothered by the idea of reforming European institutions. In any case Guy Verhofstadt discredited himself again by launching an offensive against the Hungarian government without knowing the facts and relying on the credibility of the opposition parties. This was not the first time, but if thanks to the Belgian liberal voters we can welcome the former Belgian Prime Minister as a member of the EP in the future, it will definitely not be the last.
