Roughly 900,000 people fled from Ukraine to Hungary in half a year, the majority of the refugees traveled on to other countries, but some of them stayed here and received work and help. The Hungarian government and aid organizations have been saying since the beginning of the war that those who stay will get all the help they need, M1 News reported.
With the financing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, 160 children from Western Ukraine and those who have been resettled from the war zone are on vacation in Makkosjános in Transcarpathia. The government contributed a total of HUF 23 million to this. All of them are orphans, half-orphans, disadvantaged or those whose parents are currently fighting at the front.
"This initiative is very important for us. It would be nice to have more such actions so that the children who have suffered a lot can relax. Parents fighting for the future of Ukraine should feel that someone cares about their children. In this case, it is Hungary," said Vaszil Visivanyuk, Honorary Consul of Hungary to M1 News.
Education at the Nagydobronyi Reformed Lyceum starts in September. However, the conditions for this are very difficult, because attendance education can only start in those educational institutions that have a suitable shelter. In the event of an air raid, both teachers and students must leave the classrooms. Thanks to Hungary's assistance, education will definitely start here from September.
"We have three shelters. We were able to implement these shelters with Hungarian support, since as a non-state institution we did not receive any support from the state, and we would like to thank you for making this possible, as this is the condition for us to be able to start the academic year in attendance education," said Erika Gál, the Director of the Nagydobronyi Reformed Lyceum.
Almost to the day exactly half a year ago, on February 24, the war broke out in Ukraine, and Hungary immediately intervened. The six charitable organizations started working with great strength to help those in trouble.
Donations across the border, short and long-term accommodation in Hungary. It is also difficult to keep track of what, how and how much the organizations helped.
To mention a few examples from the past six months: the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service provided assistance to seventy thousand refugees and delivered more than 400 tons of durable food to Ukraine. The Hungarian Red Cross provided a helping hand to those arriving from Ukraine in more than 280,000 cases and delivered more than 300 tons of food donations across the border.
Ecumenicals also do their work from the first moment. During the six months, more than 135,000 Ukrainian refugees were assisted. The value of the Hungarian humanitarian aid program, which was started immediately in Ukraine and Hungary in the first days of the war, is now close to HUF ten billion.
24 hours a day, they will receive all the help they need to start a new life either in Hungary or abroad.
"So far, we have been able to help more than seventy thousand refugees with housing, rest, medical care, food and spiritual support. The help point currently operates 0-24 hours in Beregsurány, and we are here, we are present, and we will help as long as we are needed," said Sass Nádja Bíró, an employee of the Hungarian Charity Service of Malta.
Thousands of tons of donations, billions of forints, 24-hour readiness, Hungary is carrying out the largest humanitarian aid operation in its history from the very first moment.
