Tonight, the Budapest Classic Film Marathon begins with a gala screening at the Uránia National Film Theater, which awaits interested parties at five locations until September 18.
At the festival featuring restored film classics, you will be able to see such masterpieces on Szent István tér and in the capital's cinemas as The Gentle Bikers with Jack Nicholson, The Pool with Alain Delon and Romy Schneider, The Sheik's Son with Vilma Bánky, The Island on the Dry Land with Kiss Manyi, Cserhalmi the Squirrel With György and Mari Jászai's only surviving film, A tolonc, with the live accompaniment of the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra, the organizers announced.
The announcement quotes Csaba Káel, the government commissioner responsible for the development of the motion picture industry and the president of the National Film Institute, who said, "in the program of the Budapest Classic Film Marathon, we can discover the exciting collaborations with which Hungarian talents have enriched universal cinematography over the past 121 years. Budapest's largest film festival awaits the public at five locations, including one of the capital's most beautiful squares, in front of the Basilica, with free, open-air screenings.
ORGANIZED BY THE NATIONAL FILM INSTITUTE FROM WEDNESDAY, RENEWED WORKS CAN BE VIEWED THAT CAN ONLY BE VIEWED ON THE BIG SCREEN AS PART OF THE FILM MARATHON.
One of the special features of the event will be the screening of The Sheikh's Son, an emblematic work of the Hollywood silent film era, and Vilma Bánky, who played the female lead, entered the history of the dream factory as the first Hungarian world star.
THE EVENT STARTS WITH THE GALA SCREENING OF KING CREOLE, 1958, DIRECTED BY MICHAEL CURTIZ, ON TUESDAY EVENING AT THE NATIONAL FILM THEATER OF URANIA, WITH A SPEECH BY THIERRY FRÉMAUX, DIRECTOR OF THE LYON LUMIERE INSTITUTE AND THE CANNES INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL.
The opening event of the festival can only be visited with a ticket purchased in advance or with registration for the opening. According to the organizers, there are also many opportunities to meet the creators, the screening of Dögkeselyű will be hosted by director Ferenc András and cinematographer Elemér Ragályi, while Ildikó Bánsági will take part in the presentation of Napló gyermekem. Erzsi Galambos will talk about her first film role, Quiet Home, and director Judit Elek and cinematographer Elemér Ragályi will greet the viewers at the presentation of The Island on the Land.
THE ORGANIZERS WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS WITH 2,000 FREE ACCREDITATION ARMBANDS, THESE ARE VALID FOR ALL SCREENINGS OF THE FILM MARATHON.
Tickets can be exchanged online and in person at the Uránia National Film Theater, the French Institute, and the Toldi Cinema, which hosts the screenings, as well as by clicking on the page of each film on the festival's website. The discounted ticket price is 500 forints at all locations, and the outdoor screenings are free, the organizers write in the announcement.
