We Hungarians, the nationalities of Hungary, can rightly be proud of Móric Benyovszky, and the Poles can be proud of him as well - said the State Secretary of the Prime Minister's Office responsible for national policy at the inauguration of the public square named after the 18th-century Hungarian world traveler on Friday in Budapest VIII. district, Józsefváros.

János Árpád Potápi emphasized that Móric Benyovszky was one of the most famous Hungarian travelers who touched four continents and wrote his name in the history of several countries.

According to the state secretary, in the 21st century's fast-paced and identityless world, it is essential to strengthen our historical memory by getting to know the past more thoroughly. Benyovszky and his unusual life path are an integral part of this, he said.

He drew attention to the fact that in a few days, the musical Benyovszky, the Lover of Freedom, which was presented with great success, will be known by the audience beyond the border thanks to the artists of the Hungarian theater in Novi Sad.

He reminded that in 2011, the Hungarian government's national anniversaries committee included the anniversaries of the birth and death of Móric Benyovszky among the prominent national anniversaries, and in this spirit, the Benyovszky jubilee year was organized last year.

Thanks to the events, Benyovszky's life and adventurous story became widely known again, last December a portrait sculpture of Móric Benyovszky was inaugurated in the area of the public square that now bears his name, he added.

Katarzyna Ratajzcak-Sowa, Poland's deputy ambassador to Hungary, said that with the public inauguration, we remember the Hungarian and Polish nobleman, the exile from Kamchatka, the fugitive and traveler, the king of Madagascar and the author of widely read memoirs. He said that from Friday, Budapest will once again be enriched with a Polish-related square, which he hopes will contribute to the historical orientation of young people.

According to lieutenant colonel Imre Csáki, coat of arms historian, Móric Benyovszky is a role model for the future generation both in the military and civil sense. He added that embedding Benyovszky tér in the public consciousness also serves community information.

"From his personal correspondence, the character of a soldier to the core, a proud chief officer and general who cherishes his ancestors, origin and honor emerges, who can serve as a worthy role model for today's generation not only in Hungary, but also in the Carpathian Basin," he emphasized.

The newly inaugurated Benyovszky Móric tér is located in the area bounded by Orczy út and Diószeghy Sámuel utca, where the statue of the Hungarian world traveler, sailor and soldier, who fought against colonization until the end of his life as the king of Madagascar, was erected last December.

The king's tomb is still on the island today.
