The MSZP is no longer clinging tooth and nail to the mayoral candidacy of its former favorite, Gergely Karácsony, the party is ready to nominate an independent candidate, whether there is a primary election or not - it was revealed from the words of the socialist leaders speaking to the Magyar Nemzet. According to the signs, Karácsony may pay in 2024 for withdrawing in favor of Péter Márki-Zay between the two rounds of the prime ministerial candidate primaries without consulting the parties supporting him.

Positioning and looking for opportunities on the left began after Ferenc Gyurcsány indicated the other day: "it is not a default" that they will support Gergely Karácsony in the 2024 local government election, before which they no longer want to hold another primary election.

We do not shy away from Gergely Karácsony's support, but we do not consider it automatic either

- they told our paper in the presidency of the MSZP, where it seems that they still believe that there can still be a primary election against the will of the president of the DK. By the way, they are not alone in this, Momentum, Párbeszéd and Jobbik also recently took this position for Telex. As explained in the MSZP:

if there is a primary election, they will nominate their own candidate, regardless of who is the winner of the procedure, they would support him in the election.

According to them, in the case of such a scenario, Karácsony has the best chance of being the joint mayor candidate of the left. And if negotiations were to take place, the MSZP would try to convince the other left-wing parties that

there is a better, more suitable candidate than the current first person in Budapest.

For the time being, the socialists did not want to comment on who this person would be. However, they indicated that Gergely Karácsony's previous withdrawal in favor of Péter Márki-Zay and a few other strange moves caused the socialists a lot of inconvenience. After the parliamentary elections in April, Péter Ungár also spoke about how he would consider the primaries for mayor candidates to be an inspiring idea, but at the same time, he does not see a chance for the LMP to stand behind Christmas again, after the former co-chairman of Párbeszéd stepped down from the prime ministerial position without consulting the parties supporting him. between two rounds of candidate primaries in favor of Márki-Zay.

Based on sources familiar with the internal affairs of the left, our paper reported yesterday that

if the Gyurcsánys not only want to blackmail Karácsony, but actually put forward their own candidate for mayor, it can only be Klára Dobrev, no other politician from DK can compete with the current mayor.

According to them, it is expected that Dobrev will be the leader of the DK and Karácsony will also be the leader of the EP list at the same time, the only way the latter has a theoretical chance of surpassing the five percent threshold, if they keep themselves to the point of running alone.

The fact that the local government and EP elections will be held on the same day is actually favorable for Dobrev and Karácsony, and the main message of their campaign is expected to be the connection of Budapest and Europeanness, the capital and EU affairs, pointed out our sources who are aware of the internal developments of the left.
