The aim is to achieve European energy independence as soon as possible, to preserve peace, Europe and the community strength of the Western federal systems, said President Katalin Novák at the press conference following the meeting of the Arraiolos Group on Thursday in Malta. He said that we stand for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, that the war criminals must be held accountable for their actions before the International Criminal Court, and that the war must end as soon as possible.
Katalin Novák highlighted:
we condemn any activity that endangers the infrastructure of any member state of the European Union, especially its energy network, or is aimed at deliberately damaging or sabotaging it".
He added that in light of this, the recent attacks on the Nord Stream gas pipelines are particularly worrying. They demand an effective and comprehensive investigation as soon as possible in order to avoid further attacks of a similar nature.
Katalin Novák emphasized that the war must end. As he said, the countries do not agree on every step taken or called for to end the war, but there are proposals on which they can reach an agreement.
We have to preserve the community strength of Europe and the Western federal systems, we have to protect our common values, we have to protect our people, he pointed out.
The Hungarian head of state stated that Europe cannot kneel in this situation, because you cannot show strength by kneeling.
"We must stand strong, holding on to each other, so that we can be the voice of Europe together," he emphasized, adding: as heads of state of the European Union, they know that the European Union is one of the biggest peace projects in history, and Hungary is still ready to do everything for the sake of peace as soon as possible.
The presidents of 12 countries - Germany, Italy, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Malta, Latvia, Hungary, Poland, Portugal and Slovenia - took part in the regular meeting of European heads of state. The president of Slovakia joined the deliberations of the Arraiolos group for the first time.
The Arraiolos group, named after the location of the first meeting, was created in 2003 by then Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio with the participation of the heads of state of European Union member states and future member states who are presidents of so-called parliamentary republics and are mostly not part of the direct executive power. The group's main goal is to discuss current challenges facing European Union member states and topics related to European cooperation.
