People are appointed to positions responsible for the smooth operation of the city - such as the position of general manager of public utilities - based on political and not professional considerations, which is one of the reasons for the operational difficulties in the capital, Krisztián Talabér, an analyst at the Nézőpont Institute, told Magyar Nemzet. According to him, the mayor cannot control more risky situations.
The reason for the chaos related to the strike of the garbage haulers - that Gergely Karácsony was unable to manage waste management in the capital city for days, even though this is the legal task of the capital city municipality - can be traced back to the same thing as all other problems since the city has a new mayor in 2019: Gergely Karácsony is an incompetent politician and sleazy city manager - said Krisztián Talabér, an analyst at the Nézőpont Institute, when asked by Magyar Nemzet. The expert explained:
clearly, the mayor is not in control of the situation, crisis situations require quick and good decisions, but the city manager lacks the necessary skills for this.
Just to cite an example, promising additional resources without collateral is an irresponsible and surreal act, and cannot be evaluated as a political achievement in any way - emphasized Krisztián Talabér.
It cannot be left without saying that, according to press reports, the city management threatened the strikers with dismissal, and when asked by a journalist, Karácsony said: "he would pay the garbage haulers' wages from press lawsuits." Krisztián Talabér put it this way:
Gergely Karácsony's reactions in tense situations always highlight his weaknesses.
According to him, his political makeup clearly cannot withstand the burden caused by the crisis situation. As he reminded, there were several examples in the past where such tense situations led to the use of vulgar and obscene language, and now it seems that the threat was triggered by the volatile situation.
When asked why the left-wing city administration is surrounded by more and more scandals, and how the current case affects the perception of the capital city administration, the expert explained: the reason for the scandals of the city administration is the lack of governing ability of the left-wing city hall coalition. - This alliance has already failed in several larger cities, and although the coalition still officially holds in the capital,
it cannot guarantee the trouble-free operation of the city at all.
This is not to say that Budapest is the richest of all Hungarian cities, and its scope is many times that of any other city - emphasized the analyst. He added that people are appointed to positions responsible for the smooth operation of the city - such as the position of general manager of public utilities - based on political, not professional, considerations. According to him, among other things, this causes operational difficulties.
Gergely Karácsony's appointee, Imre Mártha, is therefore unable to lead the Budapest utility holding company in such a way that it is able to perform its daily tasks, added the analyst of the Nézőpont Institute.
Nothing proves the unsolvability of the situation better than the fact that the garbage haulers in the capital can go on strike again in January. The newspaper previously wrote that the moods of the garbage haulers in Budapest had not calmed down. According to the informant who spoke to Magyar Nemzet and is familiar with the internal movements, the FKF employees are not satisfied with the one-time allowance, they want a more serious salary increase.
