The 66th anniversary of the Hungarian revolution and freedom struggle of 1956 was commemorated in Transcarpathia with the participation of Ádám Stifter, the deputy state secretary responsible for the development of Eastern relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
In Ungvár, on Friday, the NGO Pro Cultura Subcarpathica, II. Representatives of the Ferenc Rákóczi Transcarpathian Hungarian College, the Consulate General of Hungary in Ungvár, the Beregszász Consulate, the Subcarpathian Hungarian Cultural Association and the Ukrainian Hungarian Democratic Association paid tribute to the memory of the heroes of the 1956 revolution and freedom struggle by laying a silent wreath due to the war in Ukraine.
The day before, a similar wreath-laying ceremony was held in Beregszász at the 56 monument next to the railway station, also with the participation of the deputy state secretary. In Ungvár, the participants first placed the flowers of remembrance at the 1956 monument, and then at the plaque on the wall of the former prison, which currently serves as a detention center. In the former prison, the Soviet government held hundreds of Hungarian revolutionaries, as well as residents of Transcarpathia who sympathized with them.
Speaking to public media reporters, Ádám Stifter emphasized that 1956 is a very important date in the history of Hungary as a whole. The memory of 1956 does not separate, but on the contrary, it unites Hungarians, Transcarpathians and Ukrainians, he said, adding that solidarity is the parallel between the current situation and 1956. Miroszlav Bileckij, the first deputy head of the Transcarpathian County Military Administration, participated in the event and paid tribute to the memory of the Hungarian heroes with a bouquet of flowers.
