The park named after the 1956 freedom hero Mária Wittner was inaugurated on Sunday in Csepel.

The mayor recalled: Mária Wittner was born in 1937, and was raised by the Carmelite order from the age of 2. In 1956, he joined the revolution during the siege of Magyar Rádió, he took care of the wounded during the Corvin, took part in armed battles, and was wounded on November 4. After the revolution was crushed, he went to Austria, but returned shortly after and was arrested in July 1957. He was sentenced to death in 1958, he was on death row for more than half a year, and in 1959 his sentence was changed to life imprisonment. spent 13 years in prison; in 1970, he was one of the last to be released from the '56 convicts.

Mária Wittner became involved in public life from 1989, mainly participating in the work of '56 organizations, then between 2006 and 2014 she was a member of parliament for Fidesz. He did not withdraw from public life after that, he received numerous awards, he became an honorary citizen of Csepel in 2011, Lénárd Borbély said.

" We are proud of Aunt Marika, her love of freedom, her courage, and her non-compromise, " emphasized the mayor.

Mária Wittner's memorial plaque in the park was unveiled and consecrated at the event.

Among others, Mária Wittner was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary, the St. István Award and the Award for Human Dignity.

He died on September 14, at the age of 86. His funeral was attended by the President of the Republic Katalin Novák, former Head of State János Áder, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and László Kövér, Speaker of the Parliament.
