The government has decided that the price of fresh eggs and table potatoes cannot be higher than the price of September 30, 2022, Gergely Gulyás announced at the extraordinary government briefing this morning. At yesterday's meeting, the government dealt with countless issues: it discussed the economic situation, touched on European Union issues, and also dealt with energy.
– The biggest problem is the sanctioned inflation that the Hungarian economy is struggling with. Nothing proves the impact of the sanctions better than the fact that it was enough to announce the intention of the ninth package of sanctions, and this already led to an increase in the price of gas. This is what we can see every day in the increasing prices in the shops. As long as there are new and new sanctions, there will be sanctioned inflation, said Gergely Gulyás, the minister in charge of the Prime Minister's Office.
The government is determined to reduce inflation to half of the current rate by the end of next year.
That's why we maintain reduced utility prices until average consumption, the gasoline price cap for residential consumers, and the interest cap for small and medium-sized businesses were also invented for this reason, added the head of the ministry.
"Previously, during the introduction of food price caps, we indicated that everyone would get access to certain products at the previous price," he said.
The government decided to extend the system of price caps to two more products: in the case of fresh eggs and table potatoes, it will fix the price on September 30, 2022. With this, they also want to contribute to curbing inflation, and to ensure that the prices of basic foodstuffs do not increase.
In response to a question about the potato and egg price cap, the minister explained that these decisions will be made by the end of the year, so that they can decide uniformly on their extension. He confirmed: for the time being, they decided to extend the price caps until December 31.
When asked whether it is conceivable that the price of other products will be raised because of the price caps, Gergely Gulyás said: what people use to buy basic products in convenience stores, so they cannot offset the changes in any way.
Small shops will therefore also receive special support. There is retail price competition at larger stores, so the minister does not believe that it is possible to completely pass on the price freeze to consumers through other products. However, it does not rule out that they will partially attempt, or even do it, but cannot completely pass it on.
